How Often Should You Go to the Dentist?

Though there are recommendations that one should visit the dentist twice every year, the schedule may not work for everyone. Some people will require more frequent visits while others will be just fine visiting the dentist for a few times. Below is a list showing how often you should go to the dentist:

Children

The first visit to the dentist should be arranged when the first tooth shows up or after their first birthday. Afterward, the visits should be arranged twice every year.

Expectant Mothers

The sudden change in hormones in pregnant women puts them at a higher risk of getting gingivitis. For this reason, one should go to the dentist immediately after she confirms that she is pregnant so that all the risk factors can be sorted before things get out of hand.

Seniors

The more you age, the higher your risk of developing dryness of the mouth, a condition that will enhance the occurrence of cavities. If you notice any sign of cavity at this age or are unable to brush your teeth, you should make your visits to the dentist more regular so that he can recommend the best way forward.

High-risk individuals

There are people who are at a high risk of getting dental complications and for such; the visit to the dentist should be more often. Some of these risk factors include:

  • Plague building up frequently
  • If you have a dry mouth
  • If you consume acidic substances frequently
  • If you are over 65 years
  • If you suffer from a systemic disease that has affected the gums
  • If you are taking certain medications
  • If you are a chain tobacco smoker
  • If you have deep fissures in your teeth and especially molars.

You should never be limited by the twice every year recommendation if you feel there is a need to go to a dentist. Your oral health is your responsibility and you are the only one who can determine if there is a need to visit a dentist at any particular time.
